They are on the wrong side of history. And of right now. Facebook, Trump, brutal police, racists. They are all interconnected.
UPDATED June 17 – From the “Reinforce the point dept.” Morning Joe on MSNBC goes OFF on Facebook.
Facebook, by not moderating Trump lies, fighting Russian attacks, racist hate. You are on the wrong side of history. And of right now.
Trump and Trump supporters, by lying and dividing people, attacking protests against police brutality, and so so much more. You are on the wrong side of history. And of right now.
Republicans and republican supporters, by allowing Trump’s evil to continue and suppressing the people’s vote. You are on the wrong side of history. And of right now.
Police who brutalize our citizens, and leaders that support them. You are on the wrong side of history. And of right now.
Racists, your time is up.
It’s all interconnected. These historic moments all happening at the same time, are all connected. And those on the wrong side, will finally have a heavy price to pay, right now. And history will not judge them kindly.
A change is gonna come. Finally…
I’m a tech nerd, so I know some are going to say, “Stay in your lane.” So I’ll focus mostly on Facebook, tech and how it’s interconnected.
BUT… As an American citizen, I must speak out against all the insanity, crimes and corruption of Trump and the Republicans, even if I am only 1 small voice in a sea of millions. With military and religious leaders speaking out against Trump’s brutal attacks of peaceful protesters and his idiot photo op at St. John’s church in DC. And the cowardly silence of almost all republicans. This could finally be the end of them all.
VOTE them out !!! And guard your right to vote starting now and constantly. Republicans and Trump are trying to stop you from voting, because they are afraid of the people. They know that the majority of Americans are against them.
President Trump’s incendiary responses to racial injustice protests and the coronavirus pandemic have left him politically isolated and profoundly weakened less than five months from the election, raising alarms among many Republicans about the party’s prospects in November.Republicans fear Trump’s weakened standing jeopardizes the party in November – The Washington Post
…Trump seems to be occupying the political lane held that year by George Wallace, the segregationist former governor of Alabama…Trump May Compare Himself to Nixon in 1968, but He Really Resembles Wallace – The New York Times
BUT… As a human being, I must voice my support for the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests, in the small way that I can. And speak out against brutal police, racists, and racial injustice in our systems.
If you still don’t get it, watch this. John Oliver focused his entire show on the problems in policing. And in an unusual step put the entire show, not just clips, on YouTube for all to view for free. If you still don’t get it, watch it all the way to the end. Especially the end !!! After watching this, if you still don’t understand and agree with why the world is protesting and supporting them, then you ARE the problem.
Facebook and It’s All Interconnected
But being in the tech business, I can speak out with some authority and expertise against Facebook and make the case that it’s all connected. And say that Facebook, and all tech companies, have a great responsibility to society to be better.
Here are just some of the ways it’s all interconnected. Facebook refuses to moderate Trump and hate and politician’s lies on their platform. While Twitter does something, it’s not enough. They enable Trump. Trump lies, divides, and corrupts. Republicans support Trump and enable racism. Corrupt police are supported by both. They fight against reforms. And the corrupt, racist, evil circle continues.
It must stop. Now.
Now some may say, “So you’re against free speech.” And you’d be missing the point. I am a huge defender of the first amendment. It’s at the core of what America is. What I’m advocating is that dangerous and illegal speech must be challenged, and that platforms like Facebook and Twitter have a responsibility to moderate it. They have rules and terms of service, they just don’t consistently follow them.
It’s always been true that a lie can get halfway around the world, before the truth can get its shoes on. Well, tech empowers the lies to circle the world many times in seconds, before truth can know what’s happening. We’re faced with a power that has never been possible in human history. That’s why they have an extraordinary responsibility to do better. Granted, not an easy problem to solve. But it must be.
Certainly the heat on Facebook has been on since the Russian interference in our 2016 election that they enabled. And by building a massive platform that allowed it, and was actually designed to empower it, they failed to live up to their responsibility to the world. And they continue to fail.
But a breaking point may have been reached right now. Because now Facebook employees and Zuckerberg funded scientists are speaking out and resigning. Twitter has even stepped up a tiny bit to check Trump lies. While Facebook continues to do nothing to check Trump and other lies. This should be signs to Facebook that they are on the wrong side.
Here is just 1 article, from CNN, on this. Check the many links to more.
Facebook now faces an insurrection, as employees publicly criticized Zuckerberg’s decision and staged a virtual walkout. At least one staffer quit over it. And even scientists backed by Zuckerberg’s philanthropic organization have urged him to rethink his decision. The backlash to Silicon Valley returns with a vengeance – CNN
In fact, the health crisis could end up giving additional public momentum to efforts to rein in the tech industry, despite — or even because of — how vital it has proven during the pandemic.
If all that wasn’t enough, the ongoing national conversation around race, sparked by mass protests following the death of George Floyd in police custody last month, could prove to be another source of scrutiny for the tech industry.
The pandemic has shown how critical tech is to society, and therefore how much tech must be responsible towards society’s issues. So tech must step up, in ways it’s not used to, and often is not comfortable with. But it must.
John Gruber of Daring Fireball had a particularly relevant observation.
There’s a much-cited passage in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises:John Gruber of Daring Fireball
“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.
“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”
That gradually-then-suddenly pattern is true for so many things. Cracks form slowly, then, the dam bursts. We’re at the suddenly part for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
There could be a “suddenly” coming for Facebook, or any tech company that doesn’t learn the lessons here. The infamous arrogance of tech all too often gets in the way of learning these lessons. So prepare for a dam bursting somewhere soon.
It’s all interconnected.
Get on the right side.
UPDATE: Joe Scarborough Goes Off on Facebook
UPDATED June 17, 2020 – And this from the “Reinforce the point dept”. Just 1 of many many examples of cracks in the dam forming, before it bursts.
On Morning Joe on MSNBC, Joe Scarborough went OFF on Facebook, and specifically calling out Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg. Joe’s volume was quite a bit higher than normal and his main point was that Facebook needs to moderate hate and lies or the government should force them to.
